Innovative Fitness for Every Student

Phillips Middle School students in grades 6–8 stayed active year-round through an interactive dance fitness station funded by PSF.
When rainy days and cold weather limited access to gym space, a PSF grant provided students with a fun new way to stay moving through a Nintendo Switch and Just Dance fitness station. The program offered an engaging alternative for students who may not connect with traditional team sports, helping more children discover enjoyable ways to be physically active.
As students danced to music from around the world, they improved coordination, flexibility, rhythm, and cardiovascular fitness while building confidence and reducing stress. One of the most rewarding outcomes was seeing students who were typically hesitant to participate in PE eagerly join their classmates on the dance floor. Phillips PE teacher, Coach Hanne shared, “Physical activity is for everyone! Sometimes you just need to know what type of physical activity feels right and good for you!”
