Our board plays a vital role in strengthening public education and supporting the students, teachers, and schools of Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing strategic investments in our public schools. We partner with the district, families, businesses, and the broader community to:

  • Fund innovative teaching grants and classroom initiatives
  • Support educator recognition and professional development
  • Expand student opportunities through equitable opportunities
  • Strengthen community engagement in public education

PSF board members serve as ambassadors for public education and help guide the direction and sustainability of the Foundation. Responsibilities include:

  • Attend monthly board meetings (typically eight 1-2 hour meetings, with occasional committee work)
  • Serve on a committee Finance & Personnel, Communications & Development,  Governance, Grant Review Support, or Events
  • Support fundraising efforts through outreach, stewardship, and personal engagement
  • Participate in PSF events including the 5K for Education, Love&Roses, Teacher Supply Store, Donor Breakfast, and Novice Tea
  • Provide strategic leadership to advance the mission and long-term impact of PSF

Board members serve three-year terms, with the option to renew.

We welcome individuals who are passionate about supporting public education and who bring skills or experience in areas such as:

  • Nonprofit leadership
  • Finance/business management
  • Fundraising or development
  • Education or youth services
  • Community engagement and advocacy
  • Strategic planning or governance

A commitment to equity, inclusivity, and collaboration is central to our work.

  • 3-4  avg. hours per month, depending on committee involvement and events
  • Additional availability during our annual events and fundraisers.

PSF board members are expected to:

  • Make an annual contribution at a personally meaningful level
  • Support the Foundation’s fundraising campaigns through outreach and connections
  • There is no minimum donation requirement—participation and commitment are the priorities.

Serving on the PSF Board offers an opportunity to:

  • Make a tangible difference in local public education
  • Support teachers, students, and innovative programs
  • Collaborate with community leaders who share a commitment to education
  • Help strengthen the long-term sustainability of PSF

The Ex-Officio Student Liaison serves as a non-voting member of the Public School Foundation (PSF) Board, providing a vital student perspective to support the Foundation’s mission of enriching and advancing educational opportunities in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. This role is designed to ensure student voice is represented in Foundation initiatives, programs, and decision-making.

This position offers a unique opportunity for a student leader to gain experience in nonprofit governance, contribute to educational advancement, and represent the voices of peers across the district.

Students interested must be a rising CHCCS Junior or Senior, complete the following interest form and provide a recommendation from a teacher or community member.
